Renault Alaskan one-tonne pickup revealed

Based on the Alaskan concept unveiled in September 2015, the new model joins an expanding array of pickups, including sister model the Nissan NP300 Navara, as well as the Mitsubishi L200, Volkswagen Amarok and Fiat’s new Fullback. Mercedes has also announced plans to launch its first pickup, the GLT, from 2017, which will be based on the Nissan model.

Renault says the Alaskan will major on “exceptional driving comfort enhanced with a cutting edge five-link rear suspension and a tough, fully boxed frame”. It will be available in body types ranging from single cab to double cab and chassis cab versions, with a short or long bed, and with wide and narrow bodies, with a wide array of services through the specialised Renault Pro+ network plus tailor-made conversions and accessories.

The Alaskan will be manufactured in three industrial sites, and the brand has highlighted its global ambitions for the model in the pick-up market, which accounts for five million units worldwide annually: more than one-third of the world’s LCV sales, representing five million units worldwide, according to Renault.

Design blends segment styling with the familiar Renault face and brings a prominent front end with a large chrome grill and bold C-shaped full-LED lighting signature with muscular lines and 16- or 18-inch diamond-effect alloy wheels.

Under the bonnet is a Renault 2.3-litre dCi engine under the bonnet in 160hp and 190hp versions. Depending on market, two other powertrains are available: a 160hp 2.5-litre petrol engine and a 2.5-litre diesel engine in 160hp and 190hp variants.

The Alaskan will be offered in rear-wheel drive format, with a four-wheel drive model offering Electronic Limited Slip Differential (eLSD) that uses can detect when one of the axle’s two wheels is rotating faster and apply the brakes accordingly. It also offers a rear-locking differential for difficult situations.

Key features include a towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes and ground clearance of 230mm.

Renault also says the Alaskan will offer a heavy-duty bed, short or long depending on markets, with C-channels and four quick-fit hooks as well as a 12V power supply.

Onboard technologies include keyless entry with push start button, a five-inch 3D TFT colour display for vehicle data and Bluetooth connectivity with voice recognition. Also on offer in certain markets are Connected 7-inch touchscreen navigation (available in certain countries) and a four-camera system to provide 360-degree visibility.

The Alaskan initially launches in Latin America, with other markets to be confirmed at a later date.
