Crash footage exonerates lorry driver

The video released by SmartWitness shows the Nissan Note hit the side of the lorry and then is bounced across the motorway and flipped around as it smashes into a BMW 5 Series GT travelling on the other side of the road.

The firm added that the only reason a far worse pile-up was avoided was because the road was wet and the vehicles were not travelling at high speed.

The collision was caused by the Nissan driver failing to notice the lorry alongside it and veering into the HGV's lane.

It happened on the M6 in Staffordshire – and the Nissan driver initially blamed the HGV driver for the collision.

It was only when the incident footage from the SmartWitness camera was produced that the lorry driver was cleared of all blame.

SmartWitness managing director Simon Marsh said: ‘This new video perfectly illustrates the cameras' worth. These incidents in the days before cameras would result in a big drain on time and expense as both sides argued it out with insurers and also risked damaging hauliers’ insurance claim experience.

‘Not any more – the footage goes off and it is settled almost instantly.’

The Road Haulage Association recently found that 54% of its members have now fitted in-cab cameras.
