The SMMT data shows that total CV registrations were up 7.6% at the year's halfway point to 154,497 units. Vans were up 11.2% to 133,177 for the first six months of 2013. However, the truck sector remains down, with registrations of 21,320 for the first six months of the year – a decrease of 10.4% compared to the same period in 2012.
The year-to-date downturn for the trucks sector is in contrast to the demand in June though, with an 11.7% rise last month to 3,995 units. Meanwhile vans rose 3.4% to 23,041 and the total market was up 4.5% to 27,036.
The SMMT added that the trucks sector’s 11.7% rise in June could be the first signs of 2013 demand rebalancing in the second half of the year.
‘The overall CV market rose 7.6% in the first half of 2013 with strong van registrations (up 11.2%) outweighing the uncertain truck market (down 10.4%),’ said Nigel Base, SMMT commercial vehicle manager.
‘Looking ahead to the rest of 2013, we expect the van market to remain stable with a return to a more normal replacement cycle sustaining the market. For trucks, growth in June could be the first sign of a Q3/Q4 recovery as buyers pick from late Euro 5 or new Euro 6 models ahead of new Euro-standard legislation hitting from 2014.’
The SMMT also released video footage of its commentary on the commercial vehicle market, which is available here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPrsJTMJEwY
