DVSA to crack down on van safety

According to the DVSA, today, there are approximately 3.25 million LGVs on British roads. These vehicles outnumber HGVs by more than seven to one, and are subject to a lower level of regulation. In 2013/14, 50% of vans initially failed their MOT. This vehicle type has also been found to have significantly higher rates of overloading, when compared to HGV counterparts.

An agency spokesperson said the pilot will take place in four UK cities and rather than concentrating on enforcement, will instead be focusing on behaviour change.

The DVSA added that is actively working with industry and fleet operators to raise awareness of van and driver safety. The pilot will aim to expand on this, aiming to reach small businesses who use a van to support their daily business.
