First-ever Ford Ranger Plug-in Hybrid due 2025

Ford is introducing a plug-in hybrid version of its Ranger, marking a first for the pickup.

It’s due to start deliveries early 2025 and will team up the Ranger’s existing towing, off-road and payload attributes with zero-tailpipe emission driving capability and a shed load more torque.

The powertrain combines a 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine with an electric motor and battery, giving a targeted EV-only range of 28 miles and enabling use in the growing numbers of towns and cities globally with low emissions zones. Four different driving modes will be available, giving drivers flexibility on how and when to use the EV battery power.

The PHEV model will also come with the Ranger’s four-wheel drive off-road capability and selectable drive modes, while maximum braked towing capacity is expected to be 3,500kg – the same as the rest of the line-up.

The Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will also feature Pro Power Onboard functionality, enabling customers to power tools and appliances by plugging them into power outlets – embedded in both the cargo bed as well as the cabin. Ford says there’s enough energy to power remote camp or worksites – and drivers will be able to leave the generator at home and free up cargo space.

Customers will also be able to access a range of Ford Pro solutions, providing charging, software and service options.

Ford said the new model would mark a significant step forward in its plans to offer a full range of powertrain options for customers in the mid-sized pick-up truck segment.

Production of the first-ever Ranger Plug-in Hybrid starts in late 2024.

In the UK, it will join the Maxus T90, which launched in 2022 as the UK’s first fully electric pickup. Other zero-emission capable pickups on the horizon include Toyota’s recently revealed hydrogen-fuelled Hilux prototype and Fisker’s battery electric pickup that’s expected to land in the UK in 2025.
