A free online event is to take place in January looking at the potential of mindfulness training for improving road safety.
Taking place on Sunday 22 January 2022 at 5pm and available to register for online, the event will provide an exclusive talk from Dr Victoria Kroll, a published traffic and transport psychologist. Kroll previously worked alongside Prof David Crundall at Nottingham Trent University as his lead researcher on numerous successful projects aimed at improving road safety. She now runs their spin-out company from the university, Esitu Solutions, with the aim of commercialising their research for the fleet driver trainer market.
In the talk, Kroll will speak about a project that she worked on at NTU, where they examined the potential of mindfulness training for improving driver safety.
Studies have shown that mindfulness can have health benefits and an improvement in a number of higher-order cognitive functions. Many of these functions are crucial to safe driving, as such it has been suggested that mindfulness might be a useful tool to improve driver safety and reduce the impact of negative emotion on driving.
The talk is being run by the Guild of Mindful Driver Trainers, which is leading the way in mindfulness-based interventions for road safety, driver development and driver training industries. It provide courses, webinars, live talks and wellbeing retreats for driving training as well as corporate sectors.
The Guild’s work is led by Sandra Harper, who has been delivering its Mindfulness and Compassion for Driver and Rider Trainers course in association with the Driving Instructors Association. The ongoing course has seen driver report successes in dealing with driver anxiety, emotional intelligence and mindset.
