Free van checks poster to help fleets meet latest safety guidance

IAM RoadSmart is offering fleets a free van checklist poster to help keep drivers safe and compliant on the road.

IAM says a full van safety check need not take more than a few minutes and should be carried out daily

The handy poster can be used by fleets to remind drivers of the items they should be checking every day before they hit the road.

It follows the introduction of latest government guidance that outlines the daily checks that van drivers should carry out, not only to protect themselves but also other road users.

The comprehensive guidance covers everything from brakes and steering and ‘lights and levels’, through to load levels, tow bars and tyres – not only can van drivers can get three penalty points on their licence for each tyre that isn’t safe and legal but fleet managers can also get penalty points under the ‘cause or permit to drive’ legislation.

While the checks are detailed and extensive, IAM says a full van safety check need not take more than a few minutes and should be carried out daily, ideally supported by a checklist for documenting faults, damage and maintenance issues, and a policy requiring them to be rectified in a timely fashion.

To keep drivers informed of what’s needed for the checks, download IAM’s free poster for a handy printable guide, or read the latest guidance at gov.uk for more detail.
