Hands-free phones to come under focus at FTA Safety in Logistics

Elaine Corner, who had to have her leg amputated after being hit by a van driver using a hands-free kit, will outline the importance of road safety and explain how distractions when you’re behind the wheel can change a person’s life.

“The message I really want to get across is that you need to be concentrating fully when driving. Using a mobile phone hands-free may not be illegal but it is still a distraction,” said Elaine.  “It’s not about the law, or breaking the law – it’s about saving people’s lives.”

The conference, which takes place on London on 12 October, will also update attendees on the latest key industry initiatives, provide best practice advice and enforcement focus areas, and highlight the importance of leadership in transport safety.

The keynote address at the event will be by Bruno Porter of the Health and Safety Executive on HSE’s strategy ‘Helping Great Britain Work Well’, explaining how all can act together to manage risk.

Other key sessions are to include:

  • Technology and data – the use of CCTV – a case study
  • Manual handling – how is Olympic weightlifting improving health and wellbeing across industry?
  • Enforcement of load security by the Driver and Vehicle Services Agency
  • Making the most of vehicle safety systems
  • New sentencing guidelines for corporate manslaughter and H&S offences
  • Leading transport safety at work
