Healthcare transport provider cuts accident costs by 96%

HATS Group, a leading healthcare transport provider, has vastly improved fleet safety and cut insurance costs with the help of Geotab and Lytx.

Since working with Geotab through official reseller LEVL, the patient transport services provider has achieved a 78% reduction in road traffic incidents and slashed related costs by 96%.

The solution, which combines Geotab’s GO9 telematics devices with Lytx Surfsight AI-12 dash cameras, was deployed across HATS Group’s fleet of 880 vehicles in response to escalating insurance premiums. The integration provides real-time driver monitoring and coaching, helping the group transform its approach to fleet safety and risk management.

Jon Trotter, head of all insurance at the business, said: “With Geotab, I can now get a clearer picture of any incident which takes place with one of our vehicles and manage the associated risks better than I could have done before. The cameras, and the ease of access to that footage on the MyGeotab platform, makes managing fleet risk so much easier.”

The benefits of Geotab’s solution were shown in a trial across 13 vehicles.

In the four months before implementation, HATS Group recorded 18 incidents costing up to £35,000. After installing Geotab and Lytx technology, incidents dropped to just four over the same period, with costs falling dramatically to £1,500.

Geotab’s platform has also improved driver behaviour through its AI and machine vision capabilities. At one south west London site, seatbelt violations decreased by 74% within two weeks of installation, dropping from 3,500 to 900. The system’s real-time in-cab coaching alerts help drivers self-correct unsafe behaviours, while providing valuable data for targeted training programmes.

The MyGeotab platform has also transformed HATS Group’s claims management process. In one instance, footage from the Geotab-integrated dash cameras helped achieve a split liability decision in a motorcycle collision that would have been ruled against HATS Group based on written reports alone.

Beyond safety improvements, Geotab’s solution has delivered significant operational benefits. The HATS Group team is now using MyGeotab’s advanced analytics to optimise vehicle utilisation and reduce fuel consumption through improved idle time management. The company plans to further expand its use of Geotab’s capabilities by implementing centralised fleet maintenance management through the MyGeotab platform.

Aaron Jarvis, associate vice president for EMEA at Geotab, said: “Thanks to AI-powered video and telematics, HATS Group has significantly reduced incidents, improved driver behaviour, and lowered operational risks.

“These improvements not only enhance overall fleet safety but can also lead to a substantial reduction in insurance renewal costs. This success highlights the power of data-driven fleet management in delivering measurable, real-world impact.”
