A free poster on the life-saving ‘Dutch Reach’ technique is available from IAM RoadSmart as part of its work to support fleets with the Highway Code changes.
The revised Code, implemented early in 2022, contains a raft of changes that give greater focus to the safety of vulnerable road users through a new ‘hierarchy of responsibility’ announced last summer.
While this includes fresh guidance on the rules when near pedestrians and cyclists, motorists are now also encouraged to adopt the so-called ‘Dutch Reach’ method; opening the door next to them with the opposite hand so they look over their shoulder, meaning they’re less likely to injure passing cyclists and pedestrians.
It’s a simple technique that could prevent injuries to vulnerable road users and potentially even save lives, but many drivers are still unaware of it or not in the habit of using it.
Now, fleets can download IAM’s free poster for a handy printable guide, helping to encourage drivers to adopt the latest guidance.
It’s one of a number of free resources available from IAM RoadSmart, which says that while the changes to the Highway Code may be causing controversy amongst drivers, the reality is that we all have a responsibility for our own safety, and a duty to share the space safely with others.
IAM will also exhibit at this month’s free-to-attend Great British Fleet Event, where the road safety charity will engage with visitors on the Highway Code updates to make sure fleets are aware of the changes and are educating drivers.
Meanwhile, IAM’s Rebecca Ashton, head of policy and research, will provide a conference talk on the subject of van safety, and how training and safety policies can help avoid risk management issues.
The event takes place on 29 March 2022 at Novotel London West in Hammersmith and will feature an insightful Masterclass conference line-up as well as exhibition area of the latest fleet service and solutions. This will be followed by the prestigious Great British Fleet Awards in the afternoon, presenting those fleet operators, service firms and automakers at the forefront of the sector.
