Isuzu to launch electric D-Max pickup with one-tonne payload and AWD

Isuzu has revealed its plans for a fully electric D-Max pickup, intended to offer uncompromised performance with electric technology.

The Isuzu D-Max BEV will boast a 3.5-tonne towing capacity, one-tonne payload and full-time AWD

On display in concept guise at the Bangkok International Motor Show later this month, it previews a production model that will launch in select mainland European markets next year. Its arrival in the UK, Australia, Thailand and other countries will be “based on market demand and the development of electric vehicle charging infrastructure”.

The D-Max BEV is developed to meet a wide range of commercial and passenger vehicle needs and boasts a 3.5-tonne towing capacity and one-tonne payload, ensuring it’s treated as a goods vehicle rather than a car for tax purposes.

The powertrain features a 178hp motor, giving a top speed of 81mph (over 130km/h), connected to a 66.9kWh battery. Electric range is yet to be confirmed.

The full-time 4WD system uses newly developed e-Axles in the front and rear, “offering exceptional performance on rough terrain while minimising noise and vibration”.

While the range of electric cars and vans available in the UK is fast growing, there is a dearth of electric pickups, making a wholesale switch to electrification hard for some fleets.

Maxus launched its T90 fully electric pickup two years ago while KGM, formerly SsangYong, is planning to launch an electric 4×4 pickup this year and Ford is introducing a plug-in hybrid version of its Ranger early 2025.

A spokesperson for Isuzu Motors International Operations Thailand (IMIT) said: “The Isuzu D-Max BEV represents a new chapter in our commitment to sustainable mobility. With its innovative electric powertrain and rugged design, it demonstrates our dedication to providing customers with reliable and environmentally friendly transportation solutions.”

Alan Able, managing director of  distributor Isuzu UK, commented: “The Isuzu D-Max BEV represents a new era for pickup trucks, combining the legendary toughness of the D-Max with electric technology. We are proud to work with a manufacturer committed to creating a carbon-neutral future and announce this innovative vehicle to the UK market, providing our customers with an environmentally friendly option without compromising on performance or reliability.”

The Isuzu D-Max BEV will be on display at the Bangkok International Motor Show from 27 March to 7 April 2024.
