Mercedes-Benz has released details and first images of the new Citan, based on the Renault Kangoo.
The information released so far relates to left-hand-drive models, while information relating to trim levels and equipment for UK right-hand-drive models will be available closer to the launch date.
The new Citan will offer a similar model range to the present model, in that there will be two lengths for the Citan and a crew van variant, as well as a Tourer passenger model. The standard length Citan will be launched first, offering a load area volume of 2.9m3 (VDA). Sliding side doors will be available on each side and rear access is via unglazed asymmetric doors, or an optional tailgate. Rear doors will open to 90 or 180 degrees and can be glazed as an option. The payload range will be between 318kg and 782kg. Roof bars will be available and the Citan will offer a towing capacity of up to 1,500kg.
A series of option packs are likely to be available aimed at specific customers, as well as safety and assistance systems such as rear parking sensors and camera. Other features could include maintenance management to detect when maintenance is needed, combined with automatic service bookings. App-based remote systems might include remote door locking and unlocking allowing the vehicle to be locked or unlocked via the app from anywhere. It could also be possible to track the vehicle’s location remotely too. Remote software updates could also be available for the navigation and other systems.
Mercedes-Benz will offer both ICE and electric models of the new Citan. Electric variants are not scheduled to appear until next year. European customers will have the choice of three diesel and two petrol engines.
Diesel power will come from versions of the current 1.5-litre diesel engine. The diesel models available will be the 75hp 108 CDI, 95hp 110 CDI and 116hp 112 CDI. UK customers do not currently have the option of petrol engines, which will be available for the new model. The 102hp Citan 113 and 131hp Citan 113 will be available but it’s not clear at this stage if these will be offered in the UK. All engines will be equipped with an automatic stop/start system. A six-speed manual gearbox will be the standard transmission system, with the option of a seven-speed automated dual clutch transmission for the most powerful engine variants. All models will be front-wheel drive.
Electric variants will be powered by a 75kW (102hp) electric motor offering peak torque of 245Nm. The 44kWh lithium-ion battery that supplies the energy will be fitted under the load floor, consisting of eight modules. Both AC and DC rapid charging will be available with the electric Citan. Mercedes-Benz is suggesting that the electric variant will have a range of around 177 miles on a fully charged battery.
