New Volkswagen Caddy ups ante with extra space and tech

Volkswagen’s fifth-generation Caddy will bring added appeal in the urban delivery van sector, helped by significantly more space, lower-emission TDI engines and new driver assistance and connected technologies.

On sale later this year, the new model – offered as a standard and longer wheelbase panel van, MPV and campervan – is now based on Volkswagen’s Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) platform and brings increased interior space. The Caddy Maxi can now accommodate two Euro pallets, either loaded sideways in the middle and back or sideways in the middle and lengthways in the back. It also offers a number of new features, including optional electronic functionality for the sliding doors and tailgate plus a panoramic roof.

The use of the new platform also enables the addition of new driver assistance systems; out of the 19 on offer, six are completely new and include Travel Assist, new to the commercial vehicle range and offering a range of assisted driving measures. This is backed up by a redesigned multifunction steering wheel with capacitive sensors to help avoid false alarms over driver attention. Trailer Assist, familiar from the Crafter, also debuts along with Side Assist inclusive of Rear Traffic Alert.

Engine line-up includes a 116hp 1.5-litre TSI petrol and – in selected markets in Europe – a TGI supercharged natural gas engine. There will also be 2.0-litre TDI variants with power outputs from 75-122hp, all using a new twin dosing AdBlue system said to bring significantly reduced nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission levels than before, claimed to make the Caddy’s TDI engines among the cleanest diesel engines in the world. Projected fuel consumption is said to be up to 12% lower than the previous model, with final figures due this summer.

The interior will feature a new digital cockpit with digital buttons for light, sight, audio and menu functions and the availability of a 10-inch navigation system while an online connectivity unit (OCU) with integrated eSIM will enable infotainment systems to access the mobile online services and functions of ‘Volkswagen We’ to bring a range of connected solutions. Keyless Access (Kessy for short) ignition and locking system will also be available.

Comfort features include LED interior lights, ergonomic seats and a power supply for external 230V devices enhance life on board, plus a roof vent to aid ventilation.
