Nissan welcomes Government plans to target public sector fleets with EVs

Announced as part of the National Infrastructure Plan 2013, the move will see a £5m investment during 2014-15 in a large scale electric vehicle readiness programme for public sector fleets.

In response, Jon Pollock, Nissan GB sales director, said: ‘We welcome the part of the Government’s National Infrastructure Plan to support the adoption of public sector fleet electric vehicles. Earlier this year West Midlands Police took delivery of 30 LEAFs – Nissan’s 100 per cent electric car – and this investment programme will hopefully encourage other public sector fleets to consider the benefits of electric vehicles, both in terms of Corporate Social Responsibility and greatly reduced running and maintenance costs.

’We are also currently piloting with British Gas our 100 per cent electric e-NV200 van that promises to show that commercial vehicles can also be an appropriate proposition for large-sized fleets working within a designated mileage zone.’

Pollock also noted the news in the Autumn Statement that the tax disc is to be abolished from next year.

He commented: ‘The introduction of an electronic system should simplify the process for road users paying their VED, though of course LEAF drivers can continue to enjoying paying nothing as one of the benefits of driving a vehicle with zero tailpipe emissions.

‘Finally, we also welcome the postponed two pence rise in fuel duty next year. The economy is showing signs of recovery but it is important the Government doesn’t put too much pressure on businesses’ costs to ensure the recovery can continue.’
