The rise resulted from a small shift in model mix as higher value fleet & lease vans represented a slightly larger percentage in June compared to May.
In contrast, BCA found that year-on-year values were ahead by a more substantial 3.4%. Year-on-year, average values were up by £188 compared to June 2014, with both age and mileage declining in 2015. Performance against CAP improved by half a point compared to last year.
Year-on-year table: All vans
All vans | Avg Age (months) | Abg Mileage | Avg Value | Sales vs CAP |
June 2014 | 57.74 | 79,520 | £5,399 | 99.98% |
June 2015 | 56.74 | 75,873 | £5,587 | 100.47% |
Commenting on the results, BCA’s head of commercial vehicles, Duncan Ward, said: “The commercial vehicle market typically slows over the summer months and we would expect to see some pressure on average values between now and the new registration plate in September. As the volume has returned to the market, buyers are getting more selective and focussing on the best presented vehicles.
"As we said last month, poor condition stock, or commonplace models, particularly in corporate colours need to be sensibly valued to sell first time. There is little to be gained by placing over-aspirational reserve valuations on LCVs if the market is not prepared to meet those expectations.
"What we have seen so far this summer very much follows the pattern of previous years and, in reality, the marketplace has not shifted significantly from last month as demand remains strong for good retail-quality stock,” he added.
Values for fleet and lease LCVs averaged £6,339 in June – a fall of £48 (0.7%) compared to May. CAP performance fell by a point to 101.26% and retained value against Manufacturer Recommended Price declined slightly to 35.2%. Year-on-year, values were down by £119 (1.8%), with performance against MRP down by nearly two points.
Year-on-year table: Fleet & lease vans
Fleet/Lease | Avg Age (Months) | Avg Mileage | Avg Value | Sales vs CAP |
June 2014 | 41.58 | 69,857 | £6,518 | 99.20% |
June 2015 | 42.18 | 68,189 | £6,399 | 1001.9% |
Following a significant value rise in May, average part-exchange LCV values fell back by £40 (1.0%) in June to £3,743. CAP average comparisons fell by 1.5 points to 102.8% but continue to outperform the fleet & lease sector. Year-on-year values were ahead by exactly £100 (2.7%), and CAP performance was up by half a point.
Year-on-year table: Part-Ex vans
Part-Ex | Avg Age (Months) | Avg Mileage | Avg Value | Sales Vs CAP |
June 2014 | 80.85 | 94,616 | £3,643 | 102.22% |
June 2015 | 82.41 | 92,001 | £3,743 | 102.82% |
Nearly-new LCV values averaged £14,291 in June – a fall of £47 compared to May while CAP comparisons declined to 94.89%. As always, this has to be taken in the context of the very low volumes reaching the market and the model mix factor, as well as the increasing availability of ‘new shape’ models reaching the used market.
