SEC dramatically improves shuttle service with new electric bus

A new, all-electric bus has been introduced by the Scottish Events Campus (SEC) to augment its shuttle service and further improve venue accessibility.

SEC’s EP14 electric bus is being used to transport visitors around the three venues on its campus

Provided by ePowerTrucks, the EP14 14-seater bus is being used to transport guests around the SEC campus, aiding wheelchair accessibility thanks to its ramp and providing a 40-mile range – more than ample for a full shift at the SEC, which runs exhibitions, conferences and live entertainment.

Robin Cassidy, customer experience coordinator at the SEC, said: “We operate a shuttle service between the three venues on our campus, using two old-style golf buggies. However, it wasn’t cost-effective, wasn’t always pleasant in inclement weather and one of the buggies was becoming less reliable.

“We wanted to invest in a vehicle with more passenger-carrying capabilities and which was enclosed, and this one suited our needs perfectly and within budget.”

The new vehicle also builds on the SEC’s work to enhance accessibility for visitors; it was the first venue in the UK to introduce online ticket purchasing without restriction for people with disabilities.

The SEC was also recently awarded Gold – the highest Charter of Best Practice Award – by the charity Attitude is Everything, which improves accessibility for deaf and disabled people at live events through engagement with venues across the UK.

The new electric bus is also proving popular with the company and its drivers.

“Our new service has dramatically improved our shuttle service between venues,” added Cassidy. “As an electric vehicle it is quiet, provides a smooth ride and has zero exhaust emissions.

“Our drivers absolutely love it. Even simple things like steering are greatly improved as the buggies didn’t have power steering – and they were not much fun to be in during cold or rainy weather.”
