Silverstone Fleet Show 2014: Emphasis on fleet training & education

The new workshop-style training sessions, held in the seminar theatre in the Silverstone Wing at the Show, are a radical change from the seminar programme of previous years and are aimed at anyone in fleet who wants to find out more about the basics of fleet management.

The first session at 10.30am which looks at the intricacies of setting car fleet policy, will be presented by three current fleet managers: Richard Marmoy, fleet and facilities manager from Chiltern International Ltd, Andrew Houston, head of information and communication technology and fleet from Altro Group plc and Dennis Dugen, car fleet & employee benefits manager from professional consultancy, WSP.

The second session at 11.30 will focus on Risk Management and will be presented by Jan Kozlowski, fleet manager, and Graham Carpenter, road safety manager, both from Tristar Worldwide Chauffeur Services. They will focus on driver assessment and training, accident management technology, and manufacturer safety systems.

The third session at 12.30 will concentrate on Environmental Fleet Policy and will be presented by Dennis Dugen and Glenn Ewen, Fleet Manager from Clear Channel UK, who will look at implementing environmental policy around carbon emissions, taxation and vehicle telematics.

Each session will be presented by two or three fleet managers and will last approximately 30 minutes. Audience participation at all sessions will be actively encouraged.

In the afternoon, Rebecca Ashton, Driver Education and Development Manager at IAM Drive & Survive, will present two seminars on risk management and driver training.

The first IAM seminar will look at “The Five Fleet Essentials of Driver Risk Management” and will consider what a fleet manager needs to know to aid company compliance, fleet efficiency and driver safety.

The second session, “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly of Company Driving” is a look at how best to avoid poor driver behaviour – both for yourself and when encountering others on the road.

Fleet Show organiser Jerry Ramsdale commented: ‘We are placing a large emphasis on fleet training and education at this year’s Fleet Show at Silverstone.

‘And we’re very grateful to our practising fleet managers for helping us introduce the new “workshop-style” training sessions into this year’s event. Our fleet experts will cover a number of key topics that are likely to be of interest to anyone running a fleet of vehicles.

‘We would also like to thank IAM Drive and Survive for their input and involvement in the areas of risk management and driver training,’ he said.

‘We would encourage anyone attending to get involved as much as possible to gain the maximum possible benefit of all our experts’ experience,’ he added.

The new workshop-style format is one of a number of changes to Fleet Show 2014, which is being backed by the three main trade bodies, the Association of Car Fleet Operators (ACFO), the Institute of Car Fleet Management (ICFM) and the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA).

CAP Consulting will be one of the event’s headline partners – a move that underlines the Leeds-based company’s determination to grow its influence in the fleet sector. The company will be represented at a special networking area where it will be able to discuss with Show visitors and exhibitors ways of unlocking value and improving business operations.

For those keen to test drive the latest models to hit the fleet market, the organisers have split the Grand Prix circuit in two this year, using the National circuit for faster laps, and the International Circuit for road speed drives. There is also an off-road circuit for those wishing to try one of the many 4x4s on offer from a number of major motor manufacturers.

At the same time, the infield Stowe Circuit has been branded as the Allstar Card Services Eco-driving Hub, around which those manufacturers with strong low-CO2 sub-brands will not only prove the fuel efficiency of their cars, but also demonstrate how to drive them in the most economical fashion.

There will also be a strong presence of manufacturerswith electric vehicles, including Tesla, BMW, Nissan, Vauxhall, Citroen, Renault, Infiniti, Volvo, Peugeot, Lexus, Toyota, Honda and Hyundai. All are expected to have their latest low emission and EV offerings at the event on display and available for test driving.

The Show will also feature an indoor exhibition in halls 1-3 of the Silverstone Wing, with up to 60 exhibitors demonstrating some of the latest developments, products and services in the fleet arena. This will provide Show attendees with the chance to hold face-to-face meetings and network with exhibitors and other visitors alike.
