The Brake Fleet Safety Product Award recognises Smart Witness’ work with companies involved in road transport to enhance driver training and reduce the risk of road traffic accidents.
The camera system records a journey digitally from the driver’s viewpoint. The wide-angle lens ensures that there is 170 degree recording coverage. The unit records high resolution colour images via its on-board camera as well as three different axes of force alongside GPS positioning. This data can then be viewed and analysed on a PC, illustrating the vehicle’s speed, acceleration, braking, collision G-Forces and GPS positioning with Google Maps throughout the entire journey.
The unit is placed discretely behind the vehicle’s rear-view mirror overlooking the front windscreen, or on the windscreen screen of a truck, making it completely unobtrusive for the driver’s view and consequently suitable for any vehicle.
Smart Witness claims driver antagonism to a “spy in the cab” is quickly overcome, as the system provides court-admissible evidence in the event of an accident that can help prove the drivers’ innocence from false allegations.
The company says they have received reports of benefits including significantly lower insurance premiums and improved driver performance from operators who have installed the system.
‘This award is vindication of the quality of our product and the safety benefits for all transport operators,’ said Smart Witness director, Nick Plowman.
‘Truck, van, and car fleet operators are able to enhance their drivers’ performance and safety using Smart Witness systems. It’s a major addition to any fleet operators’ road safety toolbox,’ he added.
