The UK new van market fell again in October, hit by economic uncertainty although new model launches helped offset this.
The 11.0% downturn saw some 3,121 fewer models registered last month, according to the new figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
The biggest downturn was seen among registrations of larger vans weighing 2.5-3.5 tonnes, which declined by 19.2% while pick-up demand fell 12.0%. In contrast, small vans weighing less than 2.0 tonnes and medium vans weighing 2.0-2.5 tonnes posted rises of 2.0% and 31.0% respectively. The 4×4 segment also rose, up 65.0%.
Overall market performance for the year to date remains positive, with registrations up 3.1% to 311,989 units. Declines were posted by pick-ups (-2.6%) and 4x4s (-10.0%) but medium vans were up 11.4%, with smaller vans increasing 6.7% and large vans rising 2.2%.
Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: “A second consecutive month of decline for new van registrations gives cause for concern, as uncertainty continues to have a negative impact on the purchasing of big ticket items. We need to reverse this trend, getting more of the latest models onto our roads to help improve air quality especially in urban areas. Crucial to this will be restoring economic and political stability to the UK, giving businesses the confidence to invest in their fleets.”
