A new podcast setting out best practice for avoiding and dealing with van theft is now out from Driving for Better Business.
In the podcast (click here to access), Simon Turner, campaign manager for DfBB, talks about van security with Laura Moran, managing director at TVL Group, a UK specialist for commercial vehicle security products and a tier 1 OEM supplier to some of the biggest van manufacturers.
Government stats indicate that 30 vans are stolen each day, a 45% increase over the last four years, plus fleets lose over £60m in tools and other items.
To help tackle the issue, TVL’s Laura Moran talks about the actions that fleets can take to drive security and discusses the new ‘Tell TVL’ initiative launched last month. This asks those who have had their vans stolen, or items taken from them, to report full details including images at www.tellTVL.co.uk, in addition to reporting the crime to police. This will then create the UK’s first real-time national database, capturing the scale and nature of van crime.
Laura Moran said: “‘Tell TVL’ is something we’ve been working on for a number of months now. The police, in terms of their crime reporting, have very basic crime reporting codes. If you have your tools stolen it will go down as theft of contents from a motor vehicle. And that could be a pair of sunglasses, or it could £5k worth of tools from a van. They don’t have the granular detail. There’s a lot of campaigning to increase the crime reporting codes for better intel. That’s the challenge. 43 regional police forces all report vehicle crime differently.”
Information is shared with police and registered users of ‘Tell TVL’ will receive vehicle crime insights highlighting hotspots, alerts and new trends.
In the DfBB podcast, Laura Moran also discusses wider road risk management and outlines the business benefits that TVL have experienced as a result of its robust policy, how it maximises driver engagement, and why she regularly picks up the phone to her drivers…
It’s the latest podcast in the National Highways-backed Driving for Better Business campaign’s growing library of presentations. DfBB also offers a free Van Driver Toolkit to help operators reduce costs and ensure safe and legal vehicle operations.
