Video telematics solution with mobile device blocking launches for fleets

A first-of-its-kind fleet dashcam solution with mobile device blocking has launched to help tackle the dangers of smartphone distraction.

The result of a partnership between SureCam and Blackout Technologies, the solution is designed to eliminate unauthorised access to smartphone apps, which is believed to contribute to as many as 40% of vehicle collisions.

The fully integrated product does not require any additional hardware or installation costs. The Blackout Technologies app, installed on the driver’s smartphone, connects directly to the dashcam without the need for a separate Bluetooth beacon.

The app activates when the vehicle is in motion, restricting encrypted messaging tools, the camera and other popular apps, while preventing incoming notifications for the duration of the journey. It also includes a two-minute delay to prevent drivers using their smartphone when in stationary traffic.

The blocking tool can be integrated with the entire SureCam dashcam range, providing an effective alternative to a driver-facing AI camera that detects and discourages driver distraction and mobile phone use.

When a suspected collision has occurred, based on the detection of a high g-force event, the technology will send a push notification to the driver within seconds to verify the incident and check on their welfare. An alert is then sent to the fleet manager and/or the claims management provider to provide a swift response.

Sam Footer, partnership director at SureCam, said: “By bringing together our leading dashcam solutions with Blackout Technologies’ device blocking tool, we can eliminate driver actions that dangerously divert attention away from the road.”

Mark Hadley, CEO of Blackout Technologies, added: “The partnership with SureCam has created an industry-first solution, combining complementary fleet technologies, that will deliver significant road safety, driver welfare, risk reduction and insurance benefits.”
