VPS cuts van running costs and boosts compliance

VPS UK is reducing its average van fleet costs while also taking action to enhance road risk management with the help of Fleet Service Great Britain (FSGB).

The company, a specialist provider of vacant property and site security solutions, runs 488 LCVs, 79 company cars, four HGVs and 40 items of plant and machinery, including trailers, from 23 combined service centres across the UK and Ireland

Following a series of business acquisitions resulting in significant fleet expansion and a major restructuring that included the appointment of a new top management team, Steve Mulvaney was appointed VPS head of fleet, triggering an in-depth fleet review and an expansion of the business partnership with FSGB.

Under a newly appointed data analyst within the VPS fleet department, the company is now taking action on operating cost data supplied by FSGB and has reduced the previous pence per mile figure from 5.12p per vehicle to 5p – a 2.3% cost reduction per vehicle per mile despite a 16% fleet size increase and an 18% increase in average milage.

VPS has also deployed a broader range of in-life fleet services that now includes accident and risk management as well as vehicle maintenance and rental management and management services related to vehicle taxation and fine payment.

The move has seen FSGB’s Achieve Driver Management tool placed at the hub of VPS’s work-related road safety requirements with 100% driver compliance on both driver licence validation and vehicle checks. The programme has been developed to continually measure driver performance, while also ensuring compliance, and by acting on the data and management reports provided, vehicle-related costs will reduce.

FSGB head of sales Marcus Bray said: “There is no doubt that the current VPS management working closely with FSGB is continuing to drive out costs. As FSGB builds up its database on each vehicle, we are confident that significant further costs savings will accrue on a per vehicle basis.”
