VW reveals new Crafter prior to Hanover debut

The new Volkswagen Crafter has received its world premiere at a VW event ahead of its launch at the IAA commercial vehicle show in Hanover.

On sale in the UK from spring 2017, the new Crafter brings a new chassis, three new drivetrains and will also offer lower total cost of ownership.

Following the split with the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter the all-new Crafter will for the first time be offered with front, rear and all-wheel drive.

The range will cover four base models, three lengths and three heights, giving a total of 69 derivatives and offering cargo volume of up to 18.4 m3 and a maximum cargo space height of 2,196 mm. Included will be ready-built Dropside, Tipper, Luton and Caged Tipper models, with further conversions expected.

The Crafter will also offer an optional universal cargo floor equipped with shelving mounts, so that existing shelving systems from lease vehicles or previous models can be installed for all common suppliers of customisation solutions. Optional modular add-on equipment includes a second compressor for refrigeration or fresh produce applications, four variants of a second battery, a second air conditioner and a second heat exchanger for a fuel-operated auxiliary heating system.

Front wheel-drive engine line-up covers VW’s Euro 6 compliant 2.0-litre diesel units in 102hp, 140ph or as a 177hp BiTurbo TDI.

Powertrains with the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system will be available from mid-2017.
