WJ accelerates transition to EVs with streamlined charging payments

WJ Group, a leader in the highways sector and wider construction industry, has electrified its fleet and slashed carbon emissions with the help of Rightcharge.

The business has made significant strides in its sustainability efforts within the last three years, resulting in significant progress towards a 100% electric company car fleet. Its 70-strong fleet now stands at 57% PHEV and 43% electric.

The electrification of its fleet over the last three years has reduced carbon emissions by an estimated 134tCO2e, equivalent to 52,746L of diesel. The work supports WJ’s ongoing commitment to its ambitious net zero in Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2032, recently verified by the Science Based Targets initiative and its wider sustainability goals.

WJ Group has streamlined its fleet electrification process and removed key barriers by working with Rightcharge.

The implementation of Rightcharge’s home and public EV payment solution has reduced operational costs, eased pressure on workplace charging infrastructure and boosted driver confidence.

With Rightcharge, WJ is now able to provide its drivers with a single card to pay with company funds at more than 70% of the UK’s public charging points.

Additionally, Rightcharge automatically reimburses WJ’s drivers for all home charging by sending payments directly to their home energy accounts.

WJ also benefits from valuable insights into its fleet carbon emissions, charging costs and overall charging behaviour through Rightcharge’s dashboard, including details about energy sources and carbon intensity. These detailed reports have been instrumental in tracking the company’s progress toward carbon reduction goals.

WJ has also achieved major operational cost savings by implementing Rightcharge’s reimbursement system for home charging. Previously, the absence of such a system prevented WJ’s ability to take advantage of lower home charging rates. With Rightcharge’s solution, drivers now receive accurate home charging reimbursements through direct integrations with their chargers and energy tariffs. This has not only resulted in a reduction of EV charging costs and downtime, but it has also alleviated pressure on workplace charging infrastructure.

Paul Aldridge, WJ Group sustainability director, said: “By enabling employees to charge their vehicles at home, primarily overnight, it helps us support a greener energy mix, as renewable sources are more likely to be utilised by energy operators during this period. This also ensures they start each day with a full charge, reducing reliance on potentially more costly, fossil fuel-based electricity from within depots or public charging stations.”

WJ Group’s outstanding sustainability achievements have also recently been recognised with the Environmental Sustainability Award at the 2025 Kier Transportation Supply Chain Awards.

Charlie Cook, CEO of Rightcharge, said: “We’re really proud to support WJ in the electrification of their fleet. By removing the barriers to EV charging and simplifying payments for both home and public charging, it’s great to be able to help impressive businesses such as WJ accelerate their transition to cleaner transport.

“It’s inspiring to see the environmental and operational impact this has delivered and we’re excited to be part of WJ’s ongoing journey toward net zero.”
