As we approach Christmas, last-mile and parcel delivery fleets are ramping up for one of the most demanding and high-stakes periods of the year.
With increased shipment volumes, tighter delivery windows and elevated road risk from winter weather and driver fatigue, the margin for error narrows quickly.
For operators, keeping drivers focused and in control has never mattered more. Safety and performance go hand in hand.
The automation paradox
As vans and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) become more intelligent, many fleets assume built-in safety tech will keep fatigue, distraction and human error in check. Yet emerging research suggests the opposite may be true.
Studies from the IIHS and academic institutions such as the University of Toronto show that drivers using partially automated systems are more likely to become distracted or disengaged and slower to react when automation hands control back. In short, the smarter the cab, the easier it can be for attention to drift.
That’s a growing concern for last-mile and service fleets operating amid dense traffic, unpredictable road users and tight delivery windows. Even a momentary lapse can mean a collision, delay, or injury. As automation advances, keeping drivers alert and in command has become a new frontier for fleet safety and performance.
Combating distraction and fatigue
Few operational hazards are as underestimated as distraction and fatigue: risks that quietly erode reaction time and judgement. Both stem from the same root cause: cognitive overload or, conversely, underload. The long stretches of stop-start driving common on last-mile routes can be just as mentally draining as motorway runs, while automation and driver-assist tools can further lull attention by reducing the need for active input.
Traditional tools such as tachographs, rest rules and compliance checks offer structure, but they don’t capture the real-world stress of city driving, erratic schedules, early starts and the constant flow of digital notifications competing for driver attention.
Modern vision-based in-cab systems can now identify both drowsiness and distraction in real time by tracking metrics such as Percentage of Eyelid Closure over Time (PERCLOS), gaze direction and head position. A quick glance down at a device or momentary loss of focus can trigger a gentle audio or visual cue, prompting drivers to re-engage before performance drops. This moves fleets from reactive to proactive management.
The intent behind this technology has also shifted from surveillance to support. The goal isn’t to penalise lapses but to help drivers self-correct early and give managers insight into when and why attention dips. When fleets feed this data into workload design, shift planning and coaching, they can take truly preventative action: keeping drivers sharp, not just compliant, reducing incidents and building a stronger duty-of-care culture.
From surveillance to engagement
Indeed, monitoring alone rarely changes behaviour; engagement does. Fleets that treat data as a coaching tool, not a compliance weapon, tend to see better outcomes.
Behaviour-based analytics and driver scoring systems now give managers a complete picture of performance, highlighting not just risk but also positive driving habits. Recognising and rewarding safe, skilful driving encourages ownership and pride.
Increasingly, connected cab systems let drivers review their own data, respond instantly to feedback and turn each journey into a self-improvement session—a far cry from passive monitoring.
