There’s little doubt that the largest vans face the biggest challenges in the transition to electrification. They carry more weight than lighter vans, which will have a bigger impact on energy consumption. They may also need to cover greater distances, meaning driving range needs to be good enough for long distance travel, while ensuring that the weight of the batteries does not take away from the van’s load carrying capacity.

When Renault set about designing the new Master E-Tech electric, its heritage as one of the first van manufacturers to enter the electric age provided a distinct advantage. The van features radically improved aerodynamics, which offer a smart solution for balancing long-distance work requirements. By reducing air resistance, less energy is needed to power the vehicle, allowing for a smaller and lighter battery. This reduction in weight increases the payload capacity, enabling the van to carry loads more efficiently. The Master’s 87kWh battery is notably smaller than many rivals while delivering one of the greatest ranges in its class—up to 285 miles WLTP combined, which is 20 percent further than the previous Master electric model. It can carry payloads of up to an impressive 1,625kg1, which is 425kg more than its predecessor, and it is available in three body sizes: MM, LM, and LH.
In terms of design, the Master is a modern and stylish van, both inside and out, featuring a cabin that shares many controls with the Renault car range. The cab provides ample storage space, and the Master is equipped for connected fleets with a 10-inch OpenR Link touchscreen and the option of Google built-in2. Driving the Master is a pleasant experience, characterized by low noise levels and a tight turning circle. It’s no surprise that this model has received the prestigious International Van of the Year award along with several other accolades.
Renault’s entire van range is available in electrified form, ensuring that there’s a Renault E-Tech LCV electric model to meet various business needs. The smallest van in the lineup, the Kangoo, can cover up to 186 miles with its 45kWh battery paired with a 121hp electric motor. Its DC rapid charging capability of up to 75kW allows for quick recharging on the road, and it comes in two lengths with a crew van option that accommodates up to five people plus a load. Driving the Kangoo feels much like being in a Renault Clio or Captur, as it drives similarly to a car, with major controls that are familiar to those used in the Renault car range. Additionally, optional easy inside racking makes loading ladders a breeze, securing them out of sight, and Renault offers a variety of accessories designed to simplify the working day.
Complementing the Master and Kangoo E-Tech models is the versatile Trafic E-Tech electric, which offers a range of body options and equipment suitable for the UK’s most popular van size. Buyers can choose from two lengths, including a high roof option that provides a usable length of up to 4.15m and up to 8.9m³ of load space3. Standard rear parking sensors enhance safety while reversing. With a driving range of up to 183 miles, the Trafic E-Tech electric is competitive with rivals and similar to the Kangoo E-Tech electric. Through Mobilize, Renault provides various charging solutions for its entire E-Tech electric van range to cater to your needs. Looking ahead, next year will see the arrival of three new electric models, including a new Trafic E-Tech electric, alongside the Estafette and Goelette, which will offer even more versatility for an electric future. All three models made their global debut at the recent CV Show in Birmingham.
