Renault has unveiled the new Trafic Van E-Tech electric at the 2026 IAA Transportation Show, marking a major milestone in its ‘futuREady’ strategic plan.

The all-electric medium-sized van introduces Europe’s first Software-Defined Van (SDV) architecture to the light commercial vehicle market, promising a 10% lower total cost of ownership than its diesel equivalents.

The launch is the first step in a broader brand offensive that will see five new LCV models debut between now and 2028, cementing Renault’s position as the number two LCV manufacturer in Europe.

Designed and built in Europe at Renault’s Sandouville plant in France, the new Trafic Van E-Tech electric is built on Renault Group’s new RGEV medium van platform. It features an advanced 800V electrical architecture. This powers a breakthrough charging system that can add up to 173 miles (280km) of range in some 20 minutes.

It’s designed to still fulfil the LCV fundamentals for fleets and drivers. Load capacity will be up to 5.8m³ and the Trafic Van E-Tech electric will have a payload of 1.3 tonnes, towing capacity of 2 tonnes, space for three Euro pallets and a load height of 53cm.

Handling agility is said to be on a par with Renault Clio, with a turning circle of 10.3m, making it particularly well-suited to urban environments and manoeuvring in tight spaces. At 1.89m tall, it can access all standard underground car parks.

Improvements to front and side visibility contribute to safety and driving benefits. Multi-link rear suspension, ergonomic driving position and quiet operation are designed to deliver passenger car levels of comfort.

The new Trafic Van E-Tech electric also comes with vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionalities. This makes it possible to charge electrical appliances, on a building site, for example, from a socket in the load compartment.

An ePTO (electric power take-off) function is planned for the near future and will make it easier to integrate heavy-duty conversions, such as a refrigeration unit or ambulance equipment, with charging power of up to 3.6kWh and 10kWh respectively.

The new Trafic Van E-Tech electric is also marked out as the first Renault Group vehicle and the first LCV in Europe to feature SDV (software-defined van) architecture for centralised, flexible operation.

This architecture is based on a smart, connected operating system that replaces 80 traditional Electronic Control Units (ECUs) with two supercomputers. Operating on CAR OS – an Android-based system developed with Google – the van updates itself wirelessly, which delivers a highly personalised driving experience, enhanced safety through predictive maintenance, and a higher residual value thanks to continuous vehicle updates.

SDV technology will give business customers access to new features throughout the vehicle’s service life, in the same way as a computer or smartphone.

The line-up includes a panel van that will be available by the end of the year, along with chassis cab and crew cab versions that will join the range in 2027.

The brand plans to launch five new LCVs between now and 2028, as part of its futuREady plan.

Renault is backing its model offensive with a major upgrade to its business services ecosystem.

Renault Uptimize launches in 2027 as a data-driven programme using artificial intelligence to cut vehicle downtime by up to 50%. It coordinates proactive maintenance and provides fleet managers with real-time insight into eco-driving and energy usage.

Renault will also launch an Energy & Safety Control App. This fleet management application pushes custom safety and efficiency configurations such as maximum speeds and optimal driving modes directly into the vehicle.

Renault is also offering conversion solutions on three levels, ensuring that every LCV is a perfect match for the needs of each customer. These include converted by Renault, Qstomize and a network of 300 certified body converters.
