Toyota targets 8% European LCV market share with 2028 Hydrogen Hilux and expanded fleet ecosystem

Toyota has unveiled an aggressive commercial vehicle strategy at the IAA Transportation event, setting its sights on an 8% European market share and 200,000 annual sales by 2030.

Building on a track record that saw its European LCV sales and market share more than double over the last five years, the brand is pursuing further growth supported by a multi-path powertrain strategy and backed by an expanded corporate fleet ecosystem.

Till Conrad, Toyota Motor Europe (TME) executive vice president of sales, emphasised that volume is secondary to operational execution.

He elaborated: “Scale alone is not success. If quality does not follow this pace, it’s just a number. Real success is measured by consistent standards, strong execution and a network that delivers the Toyota Professional promise every day.”

To sustain this growth, Toyota’s European LCV expansion is built upon three strategic pillars of quality, service and choice.

The first foundation of Toyota’s strategy is ensuring every business can access the right vehicle and technology for their specific operational infrastructure. The OEM currently offers models across all principal segments – including the compact, medium, and heavy-duty Proace van family, people carriers and the Hilux pickup, which recently debuted in an all-new ninth generation spanning fully electric and 48V mild hybrid diesel versions.

Rather than relying solely on battery electric vehicles (BEVs), Toyota is deploying a ‘multi-path’ powertrain strategy tailored to diverse regional infrastructures and business operational limits.

The arrival of the hydrogen fuel cell Hilux in 2028 is central to its plans for further growth. The FCEV variant will target a driving range of over 248 miles (400km) and a towing capacity of up to 2,500kg.

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) also form part of the roadmap. With the arrival of the all-new Hilux BEV, Toyota now offers fully electric variants across its entire LCV line-up. BEVs now account for 22% of all Toyota Professional sales, compared to a market average of around 11%.

Toyota also offers its LCVs – according to market and model – with diesel 48V mild hybrids and conventional diesel combustion engines, with units that can run on renewable fuels such as HVO.

Conrad said the scale of the decarbonisation challenge facing Europe requires every available technology to play a role.

“Different customers have different operational requirements, which is why there is no single solution for every business. Toyota continues to offer the right technology for the right application.”

Toyota’s second pillar focuses on service satisfaction and vehicle uptime optimisation to ensure customer needs and priorities are met.

The specialist Toyota Professional network has grown by 165% since 2019, now exceeding 500 dedicated centres across Europe to support trade customers. As part of its new vehicle sales promise, Toyota offers express servicing, courtesy vehicles and roadside assistance.

Fleets can also access a service-activated manufacturer warranty programme. Following the initial three-year manufacturer coverage, vehicles qualify for an additional rolling 12-month/10,000-mile warranty after a qualifying service, protecting the vehicle for up to 10 years or 100,000 miles.

The brand’s final pillar centres on convenience and quality via the provision of a one-stop-shop Toyota Professional ecosystem that gives customers quick and easy access to Toyota products and services to support their vehicle purchase and day-to-day operation. These include Toyota Financial Services, Toyota Insurance Services and Kinto, Toyota’s dedicated global brand for mobility services, fleet management and vehicle leasing.

The automotive giant also offers streamlined vehicle conversions via both factory and local options. The factory conversions are for industry-standard solutions while the local conversions are carried out by specialist partner businesses working to Toyota-specified standards, providing the customer with a market-specific solution.
