Volkswagen debuts first-ever plug-in hybrid Transporter

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has opened UK order books for the new Transporter eHybrid, heralding the first time the iconic medium van has been offered as a plug-in hybrid.

Prices for the new electrified model start at £38,155 (excl. VAT), with Volkswagen introducing competitive contract hire finance packages from £439 per month to support the launch.

Available in panel van, Kombi and Shuttle variants, the Transporter eHybrid joins the fully electric e-Transporter and pairs a 2.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and an 11.8kWh battery for a combined power output of 232hp powered through a CVT transmission.

Depending on the chosen body style, the vehicle offers a pure electric driving range of up to 35 miles, making it highly suited for zero-emission urban delivery zones. Using a 3.7kW AC charger, the battery can be replenished from 0% to 100% capacity in 4.5 hours.

Despite the integration of the PHEV battery system, the eHybrid model maintains its utility credentials. The panel van variant retains a payload capacity of up to 1,132kg and a maximum towing capacity of 2,300kg.

The new eHybrid models bring increased flexibility to meet the needs of both individuals and fleet managers. The panel van is targeted at traditional commercial trade and fleet buyers, while the Kombi offers a mix of passenger accommodation and cargo space. The Shuttle is designed for passenger transport, with carbon emissions restricted to under 95g/km CO2 (weighted combined WLTP).

A choice of wheelbases and trim levels allows customers to select a vehicle that suits their individual commercial and personal needs.

The entire Transporter line-up, including the new eHybrid variant, also includes Volkswagen’s enhanced warranty and service plan, the 5+ Promise, at no extra cost. This comprises five services – three services for fully electric models – three MOTs, a five-year warranty and five years’ roadside assistance.
